Hot, humid summer days call for cold, refreshing summer drinks. In addition to drinking plenty of water, rotate in a cooling herbal beverage (or three!) that tastes good and is good for you. Reach for any one of these herbal beverages to stay cool and hydrated all summer long.

Herbal Lemonade

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh herbs of choice, such as lemon balm, peppermint, thyme, spearmint, rose, lavender or holy basil
  • Juice of 1-2 large lemons
  • Fresh filtered water
  • Honey, to taste
  • Ice

Directions:

  1. In a quart-sized mason jar or tea pot, combine the fresh herbs with water to cover. You can prepare this as a sun tea, using room temperature water and infusing outside in the sun’s rays for 4-6 hours. You can also prepare as a hot tea, covering the herbs with hot water and letting steep until cooled to room temperature (2-3 hours).
  2. In a large pitcher (or to the same mason jar), combine your herbal brew with the juice of 1-2 large lemons and 2-3 teaspoons of honey, to taste. Stir well to combine.
  3. Pour over ice and enjoy!

Summer Fruit Herbal Cooler

Ingredients:

  • 1T dried rosehips
  • 1T dried hibiscus
  • 1T dried holy basil or 1 handful fresh holy basil leaves and flowers
  • ¼ cup summer fruit (e.g., blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, strawberries, nectarines, etc.)
  • Fresh filtered water
  • Sparkling water
  • Optional: ice

Directions:

  1. In a quart-sized mason jar, combine the herbs and cover with filtered water. You can prepare this as a sun tea and set the infusion outside in the sun for a few hours, or use hot water. Either way, let it steep for 2-3 hours.
  2. Gently mash your fruit and divide between two serving glasses. Add ice if desired.
  3. Fill each glass two-thirds full with your herbal infusion, then top with sparkling water.
  4. Enjoy!
