A while back, circa 2006, I had the pleasure of visiting the amazing and fun people at Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, California. There I had their signature Brown Shugga’ Sweet Release (cask ale).
Brown Shugga was originally a failed attempt to make their Olde GnarlyWine Ale way back in 1997. Boatloads of Brown Sugar were added to the boil in an attempt to rescue the batch. The result was quite different from the Olde GnarlyWine they were looking for, but the Accidental Release of Brown Shugga that year was the beginning of an annual rampage caused by a beer that follows no style guidelines and can best be described as…. Irresponsible.
It’s got a big, giant head and a peppery aroma with a truly monster sweetness. A great cask ale with a spicy and hoppy finish, a truly awesome ale. All I can say is “wow!” Drinking a 6-pack of this matched with ZZ-Top’s Brown Sugar is one a amazing way to end an evening.
