ET’s Doesn’t Believe in Irradiation

When it comes to food packaging, transportation and storage, conventional produce often requires the use of irradiation to ensure freshness. Food irradiation is the process of exposing food to ionizing radiation to destroy microorganisms and bacteria that might be present in the food. Irradiated food does not become radioactive, but in some cases there may be chemical change on a molecular level.

Food irradiation acts by damaging the target organism’s DNA beyond its ability to repair, thus the plant cannot continue its natural ripening processes. At Ellwoods, we believe food should be packaged, transported and stored to maintain freshness and nutritional value without the use of irradiation. Our produce department is dedicated to the freshest products available – one reason why we source local & organic whenever possible. Irradiation is not part of the accepted organic process so you have our promise: There will be no irradiated foods offered at Ellwood Thompson’s.
