Gumball Machines with Seedbombs
When you’re bequeathed several vintage gumball machines, the gift comes with a mandate to do something creative. But what? That was the dilemma recently facing Daniel Phillips and Kim Karlsrud of Los Angeles’s Commonstudio design firm. “A family member had a vending machine hobby for years, and we we’re lucky enough to inherit a handful of them,” Phillips says. “[But] it didn’t feel right to just fill them up with candy.” Click HERE to read the rest of this article.

This Thursday is BUG NIGHT!
Insects are the largest group of animals in the world. They are our greatest competitors for food, destroying 1/3 to 1/2 of all food grown for human consumption worldwide. Some species spread diseases that harm us and domestic animals. However, only 1% of all insect species have any real negative impact on the human condition. The vast majority of species either do not impact us directly, or are critically important to our quality of life as pollinators and food for other wildlife. Insects are the movers and shakers in the natural world, preying on pest species and recycling dead plant, animals, and animal waste.
Join Tricycle Gardens this THURSDAY NIGHT for their first annual Bug Night! August 26th from 5:30-9:30pm at the farm! Check out the Farm Stand, meet their staff and volunteers, and learn about the work of Tricycle Gardens. AND, as biodiversity is one of their favorite topics, they will be having a bug count with some folks from VCU. Come out and learn about how Tricycle Gardens is improving our shared urban ecology! (There will have locally brewed Legend beer, bring your own beer cup and help us keep the waste stream low!)
Richmond is third “Most Tattooed City in America”
Richmond placed third on MSN Today’s “10 most tattooed cities in America,” falling in place right after Las Vegas, NV and Miami Beach, FL.
“Perhaps most surprising on our list is the city of Richmond, Va., which averages about 14.5 tattoo shops per 100,000 people — and that’s just within the city itself. Likely boosting its numbers is its big arts and college community, and the fact that the surrounding suburbs and cities contain plenty more tattoo shops — the most of which per capita appeared in the small town of Colonial Heights, which has five shops for just under 17,000 residents.”

The Brooklyn Free Store
The Brooklyn Free store is just what it sounds like. “Take what you want. Share what you think others may enjoy (not limited to material items).” read a sign at the Brooklyn Free Store. Located in Bedford-Stuyvesant the store is more of a project rather than a retail space. Housed under a tent, the inventory consists of donated and found items ranging from books, clothing, to various objects. There are no regular hours and it is never locked. Read more about the operation in The New York Times and see what they’re up to via twitter. (via The Scout)
Different Colors of the Rainbow
Just arrived today are our Shenandoah Valley Produce Auction lima beans and Heirlooms!
The lima beans were JUST picked and shelled on Tuesday – which means they are as fresh as you can get! We tried them raw, and the flavor was out of this world.
And the Heirloom ‘maters are just begging to be apart of your salad or sandwich!
William Byrd Community House

Thanks for coming in guys! And if you have a school or organization that would like a short tour of our store, please contact Paige Bishop.

The above picture was dug out of an age-old issue of The American City from 1917! We’re curious if this might be one of the first documented images of an inner-city urban garden? You can click on to read the full publishing of this article. Read the rest of this post »
