Meet the Farmers: Victory Farms

A few weeks ago I had the chance to drive out to Hanover
County to visit Charlie and Gina of Victory Farms. The quick drive, just 18
miles away from the store was beautiful. Once I was out of the thick of the
city, air seemed crisper and the fall leaves were on their way to amazing
shades of Autumn. On my way I passed a few other farms and small roadside
markets, but my destination was still down the road.
When I arrived, I pulled under the shade of a gigantic oak tree and walked
past old farm house to see Gina washing some fresh picked greens in the
shed. She told me that Charlie was somewhere out near the Bok Choy if I
could find him. So I walked through rows of green peppers, pole beans, red
peppers, baby greens, chard and plenty of root veggies.
I ran into Charlie who was hauling a golf card full of broccoli, radishes
and turnips, all freshly picked and ready to be washed. He told me where to
walk around for some great photos, but really anything here was completely
photogenic.

Founded: 1994 in Phoenix, AZ and relocated to Hanover, VA in 2006. After
successfully serving nearly 200 families and 25 fine restaurants in Phoenix,
Charlie and Gina Collins moved their family and their farm to Hanover in
2006. Nestled on a 52-acre horse farm, Charlie tends two acres of
compost-fed, all-natural vegetables, herbs and vining fruits. His efficient
use of space yields a bounty of produce for Ellwood Thompson’s as well as
enough to supply a 200-member Community Supported Agriculture program in
Richmond.
What they grow: salad mix, carrots, onions, radishes, spinach, arugula, head
lettuce, turnips, herbs, swiss chard or other cooking greens, heirloom
tomatoes, melons, beets, cucumbers, summer squash, winter squash, garlic,
peppers, cabbage, broccoli, green beans, potatoes, onions, sugar snap peas,
etc., with seasonal variation.
