When It Rains it Stores!

We finally got around turning up our “practice what you preach” knob. Our first rain barrel was installed last week and after a few small thunderstorms in the Richmond area, we’ve probably already got around 4 gallons of water in the 80 gallon barrel. So we’re off to a good start.
The barrel easily attached right to our existing downspout and took no more than half an hour to install with some basic tools. The 80 gallon barrel is from a local vendor called Green Goat Rain Barrels and is made from a recycled barrel that was shipped over, originally filled with olives, onions and peppers. It’s not cost efficient for these companies to ship these empty barrels back, thus they turn into rain barrels!
These barrels will be used throughout the year to collect and store water, and water is what we need. With our constant supply of hanging baskets, organic and local herbs and outdoor plants that we need to water everyday, the extra water will definitely come in handy. For more info on rain barrels, or if you want to see one in action, come over and check ours out. If you have any questions, we’ll be more than glad to answer them. We also offer residential rain barrels for sale right now for $99.99 that fit on the side of any house and require no extra work to your downspout or drain. Age old ideas like this make urban gardening much easier!

A word to the wise. Should you decide to utilize a rain barrel for rainwater harvesting remember that water in the barrel is only as clean as the gutter it drains from. I realize that cleaning rain gutters can and often is a dirty, nasty, job none of us enjoy doing. However, I invite you to visit me at http://www.GutterClutterBuster.com and see a newly invented gutter cleaning tool that makes gutter cleaning a breeze! And, you save money while you clean. This new gutter tool is a safer, cleaner, and easier method of gutter cleaning than any tool on the market today. Some have said the Gutter Clutter Buster is the Best Gutter Cleaner on the Market Today! Keep those gutters sparkling clean and your rain water cleaner. Consider connecting several rain barrels together for collection of overflow from the first main barrel. Complete instructions to do this can also be found on line at watershedactivities.com.
