Running a market isn’t easy. In fact, it’s far from it. We put heart and soul into this store, the people behind it, the customers that support us, and the product that we’re proud to carry on our shelves. It’s not always an easy job, but it’s one worth doing and one that we can be proud of every single day. We love what we do. We come to work because we want to, not because we have to. Deep down, we think the real reason Ellwood Thompson’s is a great place is because of the great people behind it. That being said, take a second to get familiar with these guys and gals:
Soft spoken and stands tall, Rick is in the store nearly every single day. He talks the talk and walks the walk, being involved with every aspect of the store from sustainable materials to lighting. Rick has been the keystone of the store’s mission and growth since the beginning. His attention to detail probably stems somewhere from his architectural background, which he certainly uses to better the store. And yes, he’s heard it before, but he’s not related to James Taylor. Jack McGrath – CFO / Golf Course Destroyer
Jack joined our company in 2008. After earning his accounting degree from Stonehill College in Massachusetts. Working as an accountant for various firms, he gained extensive experience in accounting for restaurants. For over 20 years Jack served as controller for the Tobacco Company Restaurant in Richmond. He also served as Controller for Bullets Corporation, a local multi-unit restaurant company. Jack has experience as a restaurant owner, where he gained valuable knowledge which he brings to his position at Ellwood Thompson’s. Because of his experience and depth of knowledge in food service, Jack is essential to the oversight of Ellwood’s various prepared foods departments. In Jack’s spare time he enjoys staying organized and competitive with basketball, golf and tennis. A passionate sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox, Jack is also a season ticket holder for the Baltimore Ravens. He spends most of his free time at the beach and enjoys reading good books and getting fired up about live concerts, especially Bruuuuuuuce Springsteen!!
Tommy Langford – Operations & Purchasing Director / Life Saver
Where would be be without Tommy? He’s the sand between our toes and the warm breeze that keeps us moving forward. He’s no stranger here either. Tommy started with the company in 2000 and then left to venture out into the world. In 2010, Tommy returned to Ellwood’s to lead us through our third store expansion and continue our growth in the community. He loves well made watches, travel, good food, and free t-shirts. If you’re looking to sell your product in our store, he’s the guy to talk to.
Todd “Coach” Taylor – Store Manger
Where do we even begin. If you look in the dictionary under “Coolest, most awesome, peaceful, chillest, gnarliest dude in the world,” you will certainly find a picture of Todd. He’s the one smiling when everyone else is frowning. Todd began his career with Ellwood Thompson’s in 2003. He departed to try his hand at coffee roasting, a long-time love affair of Todd’s, but even his love of coffee could not keep him away from his love of Ellwood’s. Todd is currently store manager, and his calm, caring demeanor helps make Ellwood’s a great work environment for all of our stewards. When not at work, Todd is visiting coffee shops and breweries and helping his wife with her business. He also enjoys spending quality time with his son, Joshua.
Gray Carson – Store Manager
Born and bred in Richmond, Gray joined the Ellwood’s team in 2009 after leaving a long career of managing in the burrito world. He was hired as a cashier, but his energetic attitude and work ethic helped him move quickly through the rankings to become a top managerial contender. In his current position as Co-Store Manager, Gray is enthusiastic and friendly, bringing a positive vibe to everyone he encounters. Off the clock, you can find Gray running in local races, doing art at his house in Church Hill and biking around the city. He’s also half-decent at volleyball.
Lauri Colbert – Human Resources
Growing up in Boston, spending summers in St. Stephen NB Canada, moving seemed natural. Since then, Lauri has lived in Worcester MA (college), Burlington VT, Aspen CO, back to Boston (grad school), Richmond VA, Portland OR, Los Angeles CA and finally landing back in Richmond. Using her more formal training, she worked in mental health and was the Personnel Manager at the World Trade Center in Boston. From there it starts getting a little less “traditional.” Teaching skiing, working at a riding camp and being a “fill in” nanny for Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson in Aspen. Film and TV production and post production on the east and west coast. Director of production for a “dot com” in Portland OR, organizing spa and “in store” events for Self Magazine in LA — it was all a fun ride but she wanted to come back to Richmond. When Lauri got back she started part time as a cashier at Ellwood’s. Once she got a taste of it she knew this store was where she belonged. Lauri is proud of our mission, our products, and most of all our employees — and these things have a lot in common. Though our employees are not all originally local they all have a strong sense of community and a love of quality food. Like organic produce their appearance may vary from their “conventional” counterparts but you can be assured they will bring the flavor!
Colin Beirne – Marketing Manager
Colin loved the Ellwood Thompson’s lifestyle so much he joined the team on his birthday in 2012 after graduating from the VCU Brandcenter. He started off managing our Community Room and now manages our Marketing Department. He is a proud native of the River City and has strong ties to the community. Colin is a self proclaimed foodie, trail runner, oyster eater, dog owner, Fan inhabitant, sailboat flipper, an expert bon-fire maker and all around lover of life.
Ingrid is our new bakery manager with a passion for pastries! Born in Peru and trained in Paris, she is a descendant of Swedish bakers and just finished a career at the W Hotel in Washington D.C. More to come soon…
Mattie Hinkley - Front End Manager
Mattie joined the Ellwoods team in 2009 as a cashier and worked her way up to Front End Manager, where she now leads our amazing crew of cashiers and baristas. She grew up in Virginia Beach, and after a brief stint at SCAD in Atlanta, found her way to Richmond and fell in love with the city. When not at work, our resident straightedge vegan spends her time biking, trail running, painting, and giving belly rubs to her dog Enola. And snacking. (Mostly snacking.)
