The second annual Farm to School Week was announced by Supervisor of Food Services Patty Seale, who has been overseeing the incorporation of a number of Madison County products for the week and changes to the everyday menu.
Madison County High School and Wetsel Middle School students had their “farm fresh” meal toward the end of the week, on Thursday. The meal included Papa Weaver’s Pork barbeque, homemade rolls, Riverbend Farm potatoes and apples from Graves Mountain Orchard. All are Madison County-based food producers. NEWS: WASHINGTON — “The Senate on Tuesday passed a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s food-safety system, after recalls of tainted eggs, peanut butter and spinach that sickened thousands and led major food makers to join consumer advocates in demanding stronger government oversight. The legislation, which passed by a vote of 73 to 25, would greatly strengthen the Food and Drug Administration, an agency that in recent decades focused more on policing medical products than ensuring the safety of foods. The bill is intended to get the government to crack down on unsafe foods before they harm people rather than after outbreaks occur.” To read the rest of this article from the NY Times, click here.

In today’s Times Dispatch, hard ciders were featured in the headlining story “Back Roads: Hard Cider’s Popularity on Upswing in VA”. To say we are thrilled about the spotlight, would be an understatement – Hard ciders are delicious and complex in many ways, giving a whole new meaning to “cider.” Their popularity is undoubtedly growing in not only Richmond, but Virginia as a whole. If you haven’t had a chance to try a hard cider yet, we have got you covered. We carry both Crispin and Foggy Ridge, so stop on by our indulge department to check out our selection.

We will be closed tomorrow, November 25th due to the Holiday! Everyone at Ellwood Thompson’s wishes you a happy Thanksgiving!

Megan Neal & Betsy Samuels of Foxfire Farms
When I was in high school in Buckingham County, Virginia, post-Thanksgiving, I went to work on a farm. Not just any farm though, it was a Christmas tree farm. It was the farm that my family, our relatives and the majority of the people in the county would get their holiday trees and wreaths. This farm just so happened to be Foxfire Farms Christmas tree farm, located on the edge of Buckingham County, right along the James River.
This year Ellwood’s is proud to offer locally made Foxfire farm wreaths available now! And by locally made, we truly mean it. The farm produces fresh wreaths daily from trees grown on their own property. Pinecones and other accents are all sourced from their land. Wreaths are $19.99 for small ones and $24.99 for large ones.
For more information on Foxfire Farms, visit their website or friend them on their Facebook.
